Healthier Oreos

Let’s face it, life without Oreos is a sad life. There is just something about those cookies that everyone loves. Unfortunately, they’re far from “clean” as far as ingredients goes. I can’t even pronounce half of the chemicals in there.

So, you can only imagine how excited I was when I tried this healthy Oreo recipe fromย Chocolate Covered Katieย and they were THE REAL DEAL. These tasted so much like Oreos. But I’m not surprised. Us Katies know how to bake ๐Ÿ™‚

They even look legit, the color and size was perfect!

Unfortunately I didn’t have any of the options she listed for her Oreo filling, so mine completely failed. I was totally winging it and it flopped. I’ll be retrying these soon with her filling and will report back.

I used regular butter, powdered coconut sugar, vanilla extract, and somehow thought adding gelatin would help. My brain figured it would thicken the frosting without sweetening it. Instead it had a weird pudding-like consistency. And there was no vanilla flavor. So I added vanilla protein powder. And then it tasted okay but its still wrong. Very very wrong.

But back to the important part: the cookies that actually worked

Substitutions and Products Used:

I made half of the recipe, and it made 7 sandwiches the size of Oreos

I used…

Sprouted whole wheat flour

Half dark cocoa and half regular cocoa powder

Coconut sugar

Avocado oil

Unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Maple syrup

(Random side note: this recipe is also vegan!)

Results:

Like I said before, I was really amazed by how much these tasted like Oreos. The only problem I had was when I put them in the fridge to set the filling, the cookies got soft :/ Still, they were amazing.

Try 2 will be updated on this same post! Can’t wait to make them again. And again. And again…

Round 2:

This time, I made the full recipe. I used the same products as the first round, since the cookies came out great. I made the filling that Katie suggests, but I doubled it since I like my Oreos double stuffed (I firmly believe single stuffed shouldn’t even be called Oreos.) I also added half a scoop of vanilla whey for more of a vanilla taste, and because it freaked me out to eat so much shortening.

The dough was super oily and wet this time, although I’m not sure why. I kept adding more flour after I refrigerated the dough to dry it out, and it seemed to work perfectly. The taste of these cookies is absolutely amazing! Unfortunately when I took them out of the oven they were crunchy, and then they set soft again. Not sure if its the humidity here or the recipe, but it doesn’t seem to matter because everyone loved them anyway!

Next time (there will definitely be a next time), I’m going to add more flour, and hope that helps them get crunchy. I also would add more protein powder and liquid to the filling because it was reeeally firm.
